White House Security Scare After Reports of Gunshots Near Presidential Complex

A major security incident unfolded near the White House on Friday evening after multiple gunshots were reportedly heard close to the presidential complex, triggering a rapid emergency response from the U.S. Secret Service.

According to reports from journalists present near the White House grounds, what sounded like dozens of gunshots rang out in the surrounding area, causing panic among members of the press gathered on the North Lawn. Secret Service officers immediately ordered reporters and media personnel to move inside the White House briefing room while heavily armed agents secured the perimeter.

Witnesses described scenes of confusion as agents carrying rifles rushed across the lawn and law enforcement vehicles quickly blocked nearby streets surrounding the White House complex.

Secret Service Quickly Locked Down the Area

Initial reports suggest the gunfire may have originated near the National Mall area, not far from the Washington Monument. Authorities reportedly confronted an armed suspect after observing suspicious activity near a secured route connected to Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade.

According to law enforcement details emerging from the investigation, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and opened fire while being approached by officers. Secret Service agents returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times before taking him into custody.

Federal officials later confirmed that a bystander was also grazed during the exchange of gunfire, while no Secret Service agents suffered life-threatening injuries. The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital under federal custody.

Journalists Ordered to Take Cover

The incident caused immediate alarm among reporters stationed near the White House. Members of the media were instructed to leave the North Lawn and shelter inside the White House briefing room as armed agents spread across the area.

CNN correspondents and other witnesses described hearing rapid bursts of gunfire followed by an intense security response. Roads around parts of the National Mall and areas near Independence Avenue were temporarily shut down while investigators searched for additional threats.

Authorities have not officially confirmed the exact number of shots fired, although several eyewitnesses estimated hearing between 20 and 30 rounds during the incident.

Heightened Security Around White House

The latest incident adds to growing concerns surrounding security near high-profile government buildings in Washington, D.C.

In recent months, multiple security incidents involving armed suspects have occurred around locations connected to President Donald Trump and senior administration officials. Earlier this year, a separate shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner forced Trump and other top officials to be evacuated after a gunman allegedly rushed through a security checkpoint while armed.

That incident left one Secret Service officer injured after being struck in a bullet-resistant vest, while the suspect was later charged with attempting to assassinate the President.

Friday’s scare once again highlighted the intense security environment surrounding the White House, one of the most heavily protected locations in the world.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

Federal authorities, including the Secret Service and Washington D.C. law enforcement agencies, continue investigating the motive behind the latest shooting incident.

Officials have urged the public not to spread unverified claims online while investigators review surveillance footage, witness testimony, and recovered weapons from the scene.

At this stage, authorities have not announced terrorism-related charges or confirmed whether the White House itself was directly targeted.

The situation remains developing, and additional details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
